Origami

A beautiful animated film, shortlisted for the 2025 Academy Awards.

I recently shared an animated short film which recently won gold at the Student Academy Awards.

I wanted to follow up by sharing the animated film which won silver at those same awards and has also been shortlisted for the 2025 Academy Awards.

Origami is a film by Japanese student Kei Kanamori who started studying the art of origami when he was six years old.

Not only is the film beautiful to watch, it is also a significant technical achievement.

As he states in the making of film, most animation involving paper folding makes use of tricks to achieve the look. This is something which I can attest to, having worked on a number of projects in which paper has had to be folded in one way or another.

For Origami, all of the designs were possible to fold from a square piece of paper and the making of film shows both the original paper designs and how these were translated into 3D.

Origami is a fantastic example of how one person’s passion for a subject, and dedication to the authentic details, can lead to an extremely interesting and creative film. In the hands of a filmmaker without the same deep knowledge of origami, it’s unlikely that the result would be as successful.
