Au Revoir Mon Monde

A fantastic animated film, shortlisted for the 2025 Academy Awards.

So, the end of the world…

Probably not a subject that most of us choose to spend much time thinking about.

Considering what you might do if the world was about to end might be depressing, but it could also provide the spark for some interesting stories.

I recently watched an excellent short film, made by a group of six students from the French school MoPA, which tackles this subject in a fun and quirky way.

Au Revoir Mon Monde has already picked up Gold at the 2024 Student Academy Awards and has now also been shortlisted for the main 2025 Academy Awards.

Student films

When I think back to the films I made when I was a student, it’s astonishing how far things have come in the past twenty odd years.

Obviously there’ve been considerable technological advancements, but the quality of the artistry on show also continues to advance with each year that passes.

If there’s one criticism I’ve had of student films over the past few years it’s that, while many of them are technically extremely well made, few have had stories which are memorable. All too often, the films fall back on the tried and tested formula of a crazy, action packed, chase scene.

At first glance, Au Revoir Mon Monde appears to be more of the same. But, if you stick with it, you’ll see that the directors clearly managed to dig a little deeper.

I’ll not say anything more, since I don’t wish to spoil the story, but I really think that the film is well worth watching.

Making of

Once you’ve watched the film, if you’d like to learn a little more, there’s also a short behind the scenes video which provides a glimpse at the work which went into the making of the film.
