25 Years in the Making

Recreating my first animation and sharing key lessons from 25 years of character animation.

It was a little over 25 years ago, in June of 1999, that I created my first ever 3D animation.

To put that into context, this was less than four years since the release of Toy Story, the first fully 3D computer animated film.

The tools and training available to me at the time were limited, and, inevitably, my first attempts were somewhat basic, but I was hooked.

I immediately set out to learn everything I could about this new and exciting world.

25 years later…

Over the many years which have passed, that desire to learn more has never left me, and I still love the feeling of watching a new piece of animation coming to life before my eyes.

To mark the passing of 25 years, I thought it would be fun to create something new based upon that first, simple, animation.

This project has been a while in the making, but I’ve finally released a YouTube video which documents my process of creating this new piece of animation whilst also looking back upon some of the key lessons I’ve learnt over the years.

I even share my very first animation as proof that we all have to start somewhere!

I hope you enjoy the video!
