Project Gold

Discover more about this impressive project and new tools from the Blender Studio.

Project Gold was set to be the next short film released by the Blender Studio and made use of a far more impressionistic and stylised look than their previous films.

Back in April, having spent over a year in development and pre-production on the film, they made the decision to end the project.

Project Gold Showcase

In order to best present the work which was completed by the studio on this project, they have assembled a showcase which was released yesterday.

This showcase not only illustrates the impressive work which was created by the Blender Studio, but it also highlights just how much work can often go into the pre-production stages of a film. After over a year of work, only a handful of shots were completed, yet a vast amount of development work was required to build the necessary tools and settle on the visual style of the project.

Production Logs

If you’d like to see further behind the scenes of this project, the Blender Studio created a series of production logs whilst they were working on the film which provide a deeper dive into the pre-production process.

Brushstroke Tools

One of the key’s to achieving the oil painted look that the studio was going for were a set of tools for both manually and procedurally adding brush strokes to the surface of objects.

Since ending the production, these tools, based on Geometry Nodes, have been packaged into the Brushstroke Tools add-on which can now be downloaded for free from the Blender Extensions Platform.

Simon Thommes who is a lead artist at the studio and the main developer of the Brushstrokes technology recently gave a presentation at the Blender Conference which is worth watching if you’d like to learn more about the tools.

Additionally, Simon Thommes has also created a 90 minute workshop, Stylized Rendering with Brushstrokes, which covers how to use the tools in depth, although this does require a subscription to the Blender Studio to access.

The Future of Project Gold

Whilst the Blender Studio have ended their involvement with this project, Jericca Cleland, the director of the film, is still working to complete the project with her own team, so we may yet have the chance to see the full film at some point in the future.
